Soldiers deployed for 11 months sing “Take Me Home, Country Roads” on flight home

When I’m away from my family for any length of time, I really start to feel it.

You’ll know what I mean if you’ve ever had to go on an extended business trip, or else traveled to a foreign country while your partner and kids have, for whatever reason, remained at home.

To say there’s a sense of longing is a gross understatement. After a while, it’s difficult to stave off the thoughts of missing the ones you love.

Which is partly why I simply cannot imagine how tough it must be for members of our military services that are deployed overseas.

Not only is the assignment often fraught with risk and – let’s face it – no one’s idea of a good time, it also usually entails being away from one’s family for an extended period of time.

This in and of itself is enough to make it so that I never realistically considered the military as a viable career option. That said, I do have tremendous respect for those who put their lives on the line, sacrificing it all so that we can remain safe and sound.

I also can’t begin to fathom the feelings of relief and excitement when a serviceman or woman returns from active duty to be reunited with their family once more.

And yet one can perhaps get an idea after watching a plane filled with soldiers returning home after spending 11 months away from their loved ones.

The video, initially published three years ago, came to light courtesy of Chandler McDaniel of the U.S. Army, who posted the clip showing he and his fellow soldiers singing “Take Me Home, Country Roads” when they “landed back in West Virginia.”

At the time of writing, the video has amassed in excess of 125,000 likes and over 555,000 views on TikTok.
